Since the age of four, Lexi has been tapping into her talent. A dash of rock-n-roll, a bit of jazz, a pinch of pop, all intermixed with a soulful delivery. As kids, we have an innate sense of what our calling is. Our passion can unmask itself at an early age but is often covered with distractions as we try to conform to societal pressures venturing into the full-time job of “adulting.”

“I started begging my parents when I was three to take lessons,” Lexi remarks as she reflects on her early love for music. Since she could pick up a pen, she has been writing in notebooks. For Lexi, believing in her abilities as an artist was not like flipping on a light switch.

“It has taken me years to trust myself. I let myself get put in the pressure box of societal expectations. It’s scary to put 100% into your passion. I realized I needed to just finally do this thing I’ve been focusing on my whole life.”

Lexi Todd is a genre-binding singer, songwriter seeking to bring women’s voices to ears around the globe. She is also a full-time lawyer. As Lexi’s songwriting has gained momentum, she’s found ways to balance her role as a lawyer by practicing in the entertainment law sector, specifically in the musical field. Her tenacity and self-discipline as a lawyer have opened doors for her musically and her gratitude for the opportunities work has provided for her is very apparent. She describes herself as a very artist friendly lawyer and her primary goal is to educate friends and close musicians on the music business, which can often be “archaic and purposefully difficult to understand”.

Working as a lawyer in the music industry has opened a lot of doors for Lexi to push her passion for singing and songwriting. In addition to knowledge gained from the publishing house she works for, numerous artists have inspired Lexi to push past her fears and embrace her passions with her whole being. “I’ve gained a lot connections. I actually got my South by Southwest show through work. And I’ve learned a lot about the music business. I got to go to the Grammys through work.”

When asked about her music, she opens up and you can see the light in her eyes; it’s a gift she was born with. Many of us only daydream of pursuing our hearts’ greatest desires, but Lexi has turned that daydream into a reality. Lexi’s passion for songwriting gives her a platform not only to share the struggles from her own experiences but those women around her who don’t necessarily have an outlet.

“When collaborating for my EP that I released in October, we would basically start with storytime. We would sit down and just vent, get everything out. At that point in time I had a close friend that was going through a domestically abusive relationship, both mentally and physically. I had a family member who was doing the same. I myself was struggling with some interpersonal verbal abuse. That was difficult to initially express but being able to tell the story first, just without pressure and trying to worry about rhymes and rhythm was really helpful. I would write down certain buzzwords and then from there we would start writing.”

When exploring how we can remove the blindfold from society on particular issues, like that of domestic violence, Lexi opens up about her delicate approach to the “unwoke” percentage of the population. She believes we must handle situations “without shoving [them] down their throats. We don’t want to isolate people.” Her voice is her tool to both inspire and empower people.
